Orkney

Friday morning saw the Hansel team at Gills Bay Ferry Terminal, waiting for the Pentalina to take us north to St Margaret's Hope, Orkney. Having watched nervously as a coach, a fuel lorry and a massive articulated removal truck reversed carefully and wheel-perfect onto the car deck, we were relieved to discover that cars were allowed to go on forwards; no entertainment for the HGV drivers today.

If I thought Edinburgh to Banchory was a long haul, it paled completely in comparison to the Banchory to Thurso drive. With a brief stop for coffee and lunch it took us all of six hours to get there, with the stretch from Dornoch to Thurso undertaken in thick fog.

Fortunately, our brave and bold runner Michael had arrived in Melvich before the fog came, and with a couple of blisters to boot (sorry, bad pun).

We had a long drive from Edinburgh – longer than I had expected, and even longer because of the tram-works and all the resulting traffic diversions. But it was good to be coming north at last.

When we started to think about which venues Hansel should visit, our long-time cinema consultant, Ron Inglis, suggested the Woodend Barn in Banchory, which he obviously admires very much. Now that we've seen it and been there, we can see why he likes it.

When we first started thinking about developing Hansel last year, and realised how frankly crazy it was, we put it past our friends at Edinburgh Filmhouse and asked them if they thought it made any sense. The response was immediate and unequivocal – “go for it, and make sure you come here!” So of course - we did.

Bo'ness

Up early on the MV Hjaltland so that we can start our journey to Bo'ness. Fortunately it was a really smooth crossing, as I am a rubbish sailor … but I was able to entertain the crew with my fancy reversing off the car deck.

It's been a very long time since I was last in Belfast, and my! There have been some changes....including the trendy stuff around the Cathedral Quarter where we were doing the 17th Hansel screening.

Ucheldre is a former convent in a quiet corner of the port town of Holyhead, now a community arts centre including an auditorium, gallery, workshops and cafe. The auditorium, which used to be the convent chapel, has just been upgraded with retractable seating and a new digital projector, so the audience gets to see recent releases in unique surroundings.

Prestatyn

Strange sense of being 'Banquo's Ghost' approaching Prestatyn, as I grew up not far from here, and can see the names of former school boyfriends on estate agents' signs and above the door of a photographer's studio. Where are we all now, indeed!

Bristol

After driving round and round Bristol city centre in ever-decreasing circles Jono and I finally discovered our hotel, very conveniently opposite The Watershed (poor Simon was consigned to the Travelodge on Cribbs Causeway).  It was clear that Jono was falling for the attractions of this lively city before we even got out of the car.... and it IS a lively city, with so much going on. One of its main cultural hubs is The Watershed, an extremely attractive venue down by the river in the heart of the city centre.
